Salisbury Steak

"I came up with this recipe while referencing another recipe here on Zaar. I would have simply reviewed the recipe and added to my cookbook but I made such changes that it is not like the original recipe I referenced, so I feel it would not be a fair rating if I did rate it(even a high rating, which it would have been) I am not saying this is better, but different, the recipe I went by is recipe #16143 . The main reason for the biggest change - the addition of brown gravy is because I like salisbury steaks with mashed potatoes and in order to have enough gravy for 4 or 5 serving of potatoes needs more gravy, plus when I think of salisbury steak I think of brown gravy."

  • In large skillet over medium-high heat, melt margarine and cook 3 or 4 patties until browned on both sides, remove.
  • Repeat with remaining patties and remove, spoon off fat.
  • While patties are browning mix brown gravy mix with 1 cup of cold water.

  • Return patties to skillet, reduce heat to low cover; simmer 20 minutes or until patties are thoroughly cooked and no longer pink, turning patties occasionally.

  • Serve patties topped with sauteed onions and mushroom sauce spooned over.
  • I serve this with mashed potatoes, you could use egg noodles instead.

  1. this was wonderfull worked out well for us. Thanks for posting.

  2. I really liked the flavor of this!!! Served with mashed potatoes.

  3. The flavor was a bit salty and the patty's did not stay together. The only change that I made to the recipe was replace the chopped onions with onion powder because my family "thinks" they don't like onions and freak out if they see them in anything! So, to get the flavor intended for a recipe I have come to use that trick. The recipe was very quick and easy, so I will probably try it again but I will just add more bread crumbs to help hold the patty's together.

  4. This is a winner! My DH cringes at casseroles and any meat patty that's not in a bun. This creates a problem as we have 50 pounds of ground beef in the freezer. He went back for seconds and even took a plate in to work! I browned the onions in the skillet before step 6 and added a shake or two of garlic. This is a great easy meal. Served it with mashed potatoes and assorted veggies on the side. Thank you, this will be added to my regular rotation until the freezer is empty!

  5. Hello Chipfo, what a great recipe! Instead of Salisbury Steaks I opted to make meatballs, using canola oil in place of the margarine. I added a little horseradish to the meatballs. Sauteed red & yellow bell peppers with the onions & mushrooms (adding non stick cooking spray.)Otherwise, for the gravy I cooked just the way the recipe reads. If it got a little low on cooking liquid I added beef stock. They were delcious - served it white rice, black beans & sweet plantains, and everybody who ate it wanted to know why we hadn't made it sooner! They are discussing the possibilities of putting it on the menu for our restaurant at the "home." Thank you for a lovely recipe, Diane :)
