I asked for this recipe at a party 20 years ago, and I've been making it ever since! I always feel a little guilty when people ask for the recipe, because it's so easy!!! The addition of the cilantro makes it great, and fresh tasting. Don't use regular stewed tomatoes; it just won't taste nearly as good.
- 2 (14 ounce) cans Mexican-style stewed tomatoes, mostly drained
- 1⁄4 cup fresh cilantro (or more)
- 1⁄4 of an onion
- 5 slices nacho-style jalapenos
- 5 dashes cumin powder
- 5 dashes chili powder
- salt, to taste
- Put all ingredients in a blender and chop until fairly smooth.
- Store in a jar in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
This was GOOD!! So simple! I used 1 can of regular stewed tomatoes and 1 can of rotel, I didn't drain. I couldn't find the mexican stewed tomatoes. It was SO GOOD!! Thanks so much for an easy, yummy recipe that I will make over and over again.
We live in Johannesburg, South Africa, and though available, salsa is fairly expensive. My daughter LOVES salsa, so I have been trying recipes from Zaar. This has been our favourite so far. My husband says "Old El Paso, move over. :) It is full of flavour, and has a wonderful, runny consistency, which we prefer over the really chunky. Thanks for a great recipe.
I'm glad I waited a day to review because the flavor is much better the second day. The cilantro does make it taste very fresh and I also squeezed 1/4 of a lime into the salsa which gave it a nice bright flavor. Salsa in less than 5 minutes? It can be done!
