- 1 lb hamburger
- 1⁄2 cup chopped onion
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vinegar
- 2 tablespoons mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 dash pepper
- 3⁄4 cup tomato juice
- 1⁄2 cup ketchup
- 3⁄4 cup water
- quick cooking oatmeal
directions
- Brown hamburger and onion, drain. Combine brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, tomato juice, ketchup and water--pour over browned hamburger. Bring to a boil, then simmer over medium low heat. While simmering, add small amounts of quick cooking oatmeal to hamburger mixture to thicken up sauce--sprinkle slowly in parts. Serve over buns.

Great sloppy joe's!!! I made as written, but only 1/2 of the recipe. I was worried that the brown sugar would make it too sweet for my tastes, but with the vinegar and mustard, it wasn't too sweet at all. Rather than adding the thickner, I just let it simmer down so that it wasn't runny and it allowed the flavors to blend. Thanks for sharing your recipe. Made for Spring PAC 2011.
