OK, I doubled the recipe. One cup of butter sounds like a lot and IS a lot but it's so worth it!!! It was rich, tasty, and yummy beyond belief. Next time I may sprinkle cinnamon on top for taste and looks but truth is it isn't necessary. It's just yummy. Jewish people would refer to this as a dairy kugel. It's going to be a permanent fixture in my house around Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) since it is customary to eat apples then.

This turned out delicious! I made this vegan by using soy milk instead of milk and vegan butter instead of butter. Also based on other reviews I cut the amount of butter to a little more than a 1/4 cup (just enough for a thin layer on the bottom of the pan). Thank you and your neighbor for such a great dessert.

YUMMY...thank you Chuck in Killbuck and Steve. My family loved it. My husband does not like baked fruit but he loves this dish. I followed the recipe exactly except for reducing the butter to 1/3 cup and increasing the cinnamon to 1 teaspoon. It tasted great. I used a medium sized (13x9x2) oval au gratin dish (I wanted more edges because I love crusts). We all wanted more edges because they were so crunchy and buttery. My daughter and I thought it could have used more apples, my husband said "No, it's perfect the way it is." We served it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. They all preferred the ice cream. High praises all around.

I nice twist on an apple dessert. My kids helped me make it and it was quick and easy. I used margarine instead of butter, but I probably would cut down the amount to 1/3c next time, and I used 1 tsp cinnamon. It is great, I have been picking at it and I am afraid I might have to make another one before dinner. Thanks for sharing. Jenn

I’m over the hill and heading down the back side at a rapid rate it seems, single, and retired now.
My loves? Good friends, most of all. After that I guess it would be wildlife and photographing it. In fact, I love anything that deals with wild animals and the outdoors. Then comes playing with my dog and making a mess trying to cook in the kitchen or around the fire pit, grill or smoker while enjoying a good tumbler of whiskey (whisky).
