This is the recipe for apple betty found in the old Better Homes and Garden Cookbook from the 70's. You can't find this anymore, they've changed the recipe in the new one. This is so simple but completely delicious.
- 4 cups sliced pared apples
- 1⁄4 cup orange juice
- 1 cup sugar
- 3⁄4 cup flour
- 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1⁄4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1⁄2 cup butter
- Mound apples in buttered 9 inch pie pan; sprinkle with the orange juice.
- Combine remaining ingredients in bowl.
- Sprinkle over apples.
- Bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until apples are tender and topping crisp.
Thank you so much for posting this!!! This is the recipe that I grew up with, my mom would make it for my birthday every year at my request. I have been looking all over for this recipe without the oats, breadcrumbs and other junk that's been added to the crumble recipe over the years. It's fabulous as is. Also, I've added a few berries to the apples when they're in season for a little added kick. Again, thanks for your post and shame on good cook books for changing tried and true recipies and leaving the name the same. Thanks again!
My grandma has the exact recipe in her old cookbook. I was literally writing it down and decided to search food.com and see if anyone had the exact recipe and I found you!! I'm so glad because this is SO amazing! I love when my grandma pulls out her old recipes, they are always so delicious and amazing!! Thanks!!!
The most simple recipe and by far, the best!
