Savory Spiral Cut Ham

"I just love Spiral Cut Ham. I got one on Sunday at a very good price. When I got home I looked on Zaar for a recipe but couldn't find what I wanted. This is a culmination of a recipe that was suggested and my own ideas. This recipe uses an Oven Cooking Bag. I don't know how the recipe will come out if you do not use one. My ham came out so good and moist. The Oven Cooking Bags help to seal in the juices from the ham and any other ingredients you add to it. It keeps the juices from evaporating and drying out in the pan. I also noticed that the ham didn't take as long to bake as I thought it would. You also don't have to turn your oven to a high temp...only 325°F. It kind of slow cooks the ham. Spiral Cut Hams are precooked so you basically just want to warm them up..get them hot."

  • You will also need: 1 large Reynolds Oven Cooking Bag (turkey size).
  • Heat the oven to 325°F.
  • Put the flour into the cooking bag and shake the bag until it is completely covered with the flour.
  • Do not remove remaining flour from the bag (I didn't anyway).
  • This prevents the bag from exploding in the oven while baking.
  • Place the bag in a large cake pan or a roasting pan.
  • Open the bag and put the ham in it, cut side down.
  • Set aside.
  • In a small sauce pan mix the chicken broth, honey glaze mix, mustard and orange juice over medium heat until the glaze mix and orange juice concentrate are dissolved.
  • Pour it over the ham.
  • With a tie that came with the bag, tightly seal the bag.
  • Cut 6-1 inch slits into the top and upper sides of the bag to allow steam to escape.
  • Make sure the bag is completely inside the pan.
  • Do not allow any of it to hang over the sides of the pan.
  • Place on middle rack of the oven, allowing enough room for the bag to expand without touching the top heating coil.
  • This prevents the bag from melting.
  • Bake for approximately 1 hour or until the ham slices begin to separate and the top of the ham starts to brown.
  • Lower the oven temp to 200°F and let the ham sit in the oven until the rest of the meal is ready.
  • You could probably lower it to 175°F if you want to.
  • Spiral cut ham is precooked so it does not have to reach a certain temperature.
  • You are just warming it or making it hot for a hot meal.
  • When you are ready, remove the ham from the oven.
  • Allow it to cool enough to touch the bag.
  • Remove the tie from the bag and slowly tear the bag open at the top of it.
  • Remove ham and place it on a large plate or a platter.
  • Allow to cool slightly before cutting it.
  • Pour the juices from the baking/roasting into a saucepan and make gravy with it or pour it into a container and save it for soup.
  • Taste the juice from the ham.
  • If it is very strong tasting, (mine was) you may need to add water, a little at a time until it is at your desired strength.
  • Save the ham bone to make ham stock or soup with, leaving some of the meat on the bone.

  1. Excellent recipe! I will use this again and again. It created an extremely moist, flavorable ham. I didn't have orange juice concentrate, so I used 1/4 cup of orange soda instead and it turned out fine. Thanks for posting!

  2. Excellent ham. Baked 10+ lb ham 1.5 hrs.

  3. This made a great ham. Followed as listed for a 10+ lb ham. Was easily done after an hour in the over.

  4. I appreciated the detailed instructions on using the cooking bag. This was the first time I had tried a ham in one. The ham turned out very moist. I do wish I had basted the ham though. All of the tasty sauce was in the bottom of the bag. Thank you for sharing the recipe!

  5. I DON'T LIKE HAM! Or should I say it has never liked me. I finally broke down and made this for the three ham lovers in our family. All three of them loved it. It tasted good but I avoid ham. I would use this again. Maybe I will let them have a ham once per year. I found a great price on a Farmer John Spiral Cut Ham. I will use the bone for Split Pea Soup. I know that I will enjoy the soup even though one of the ham lovers hates it. They liked the gravy I made with the juices from the bag. It is sweet but they enjoyed it on the ham.

I just love to cook. I love to experiment with different recipes and love to get new ones. I love to share my recipes and love to have others taste things I make. I baked a lot while I was living at home...in high school. I have babysat for over 33 years for different people I have cooked meals for them when it was needed. At one time, I babysat 2 children in my apartment and cooked dinner for them, their mom and their grandmother. I loved it. I took care of them for a couple of years. The name AuntWoofieWoof has a very special meaning. I babysat for a family with 3 children in their home several years ago. One day the youngest boy came up to me and said "Aunt Woofie Woof......." and proceeded to say what he had to say. He called me that name for 2 days. When I asked him where he got the name from, his reply was "It was on a Dr Suess tape my momma got me at the Library". I thought it was so cute that I decided to use it on the internet. I babysat for that family for 8 years!! That little boy is now in middle school. I still see him and his family every now and then. His mom and I keep in touch over the phone. I usually spend Thanksgiving Day with them. It is fun watching the kids grow into fine young adults. The oldest daughter, is in her early 20's, is working and has her own place. She is a beautiful young lady. I am a Substitute Playground Supervisor and a Crossing Guard at an Elementary School. I love both jobs. <img src="http://www.recipezaar.com/members/home/296809/BannerforAMpages1a.jpg"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/PACfall08partic.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/IWasAdoptedfall08.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"> <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w115/bugh8er/food%20and%20swaps/4811_36055_t.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"> <img src="http://www.pickle.com/plink/ph/795B07337A4704307B51032E7D5F0A3578501C512307476E143E5A652E076C38735E0A377E5C0B31140741682C4659712C.jpg" border="0" alt="RSC-HiddenGem-part"title="Photo and Video Sharing"/> <img src="http://www.recipezaar.com/members/home/1535/CLC2.gif"> <img src="http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/carolinamoon21/Derfcookathon.jpg"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/Adopted1smp.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/smPACp.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"> <img src="http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/MrsTeny/SaltPepperSwap.jpg"> <img src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/DUCHESS13/RSC%20Banners/RSC11-Participant.jpg"> <img src="http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q23/vseward/Bevy/officialmemberofthebevtaggame.jpg"> <img src="http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q23/vseward/GIFS/zaargroupie.gif"> <img src="http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i25/bayhill/bswap11.jpg"> <img src="http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/housedaughter/cswap.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/PAC08Main.jpg"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/adoptedspring08.jpg"> <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/AuntWoofieWoof/CafeZmakkBanner2.jpg" width=90%> . <img src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/DUCHESS13/Zaar%20World%20Tour%204/ZWTAB-tg.gif">
