Homemade hot chocolate is so much tastier than the packaged, and it doesn't require special ingredients. The extra effort is worth it. My Mom said she makes single servings in the microwave by boiling the sugar and water and hot chocolate together--stir it--then add milk and microwave. This is the good old-fashioned on the stove hot chocolate...Recipe courtesy of Betty Crocker's New Cookbook.

Ingredients Nutrition

  • 3 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate
  • 1 12 cups water
  • 13 cup sugar
  • 1 dash salt
  • 4 12 cups milk

  1. Heat chocolate and water in 1 1/2 quart saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth.
  2. Stir in sugar and salt.
  3. Heat to boiling.
  4. Reduce heat to low.
  5. Simmer uncovered 4 minutes, stirring constantly.
  6. Stir in milk.
  7. Heat just until hot (do not boil because skim will foam on top).
  8. Beat with hand beater until foamy, or stir until smooth.
  9. Serve immediately.
