I found this recipe in Epicurious Magazine. Be sure to serve with orange slices and a side of bacon or fried ham to complete your meal. This recipe can be prepared the night before to make your morning preparation a little easier.
- 4 large eggs
- 3⁄4 cup half-and-half
- 1⁄4 cup Grand Marnier (or other orange-flavored liqueur) or 1⁄4 cup frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed (or other orange-flavored liqueur)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon orange peel, grated
- 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 French bread, sliced (3/4-inch-thick)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons butter
- powdered sugar
- warm maple syrup
- Whisk first 6 ingredients to blend in medium bowl.
- Dip each bread slice into egg mixture and arrange in 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish.
- Pour remaining egg mixture evenly over bread.
- Let stand until egg mixture is absorbed, at least 20 minutes.
- (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.).
- Place baking sheet in oven and preheat to 350°F.
- Melt 2 tablespoons butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat.
- Add 4 bread slices to skillet and sauté until cooked through and brown, about 3 minutes per side.
- Place on baking sheet in oven to keep warm. Repeat cooking with remaining 2 tablespoons butter and 4 bread slices.
- Transfer French toast to 4 plates.
- Sift powdered sugar over.
- Serve with maple syrup.
I'm in agreement with Charlotte J! This is a 10-star recipe!!! I used the Grand Marnier and let these stand for about 4 hours. The subtle taste of the Grand Marnier combined with the orange 'bits' are a total delight. This is now my favorite French Toast recipe ever, and I can't wait to serve this to guests. Thanks Bev!!
This is a 10 STAR recipe!! We used the orange juice in making this today. We really liked the flavor that the orange juice gave this. You don't even need maple syrup with this. But if you use it just put a drizzle on so you don't miss the wonderful flavor of this toast! SIL gave us some oranges she brought back from Texas so I used the zest form those. DD has requested this to be served here at her post prom breakfast when she has her group of friends over that night/morning. Bev, thank you for sharing this recipe!! Made for Zaar Tag 2007
I loved this recipe :) It's a nice twist to the original french toast recipe. I used brioche instead of french bread. I soaked the brioche slices right before I baked them. Brioche texture is light, and would be too soggy if I soaked overnight. Also, instead of Grand Marnier, I used Cointreau (orange flavored liqueur). Thank you for a great recipe.
