Chocolate Cake w/ Vanilla Sauce

I was told this is a Shaker recipe from Sabbath Day Lake, Maine. I do know it was a huge hit at a dinner last week. Very moist and rich.

  1. Cake: Heat over to 375 F degrees.
  2. Cream the sugar and eggs together.
  3. Add milk, butter and vanilla.
  4. Sift dry ingredients& add to the dry mixture.
  5. Mix thoroughly.
  6. Bake in a 9" x 9" or a small bundt cake pan, for 25 minutes.
  7. Filling: Melt butter in medium saucepan.
  8. Remove from heat.
  9. Add remaining ingredients, mixing well.
  10. Simmer, stirring over low heat about 5 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved.
  11. Serve hot over pudding or cake.

We greatly enjoyed this little cake. The directions were a bit jumbled, but all came together well and baked up moist and chocolatey. I reduced the vanilla sauce ingredients by more than half...it's so rich! The entire amount of vanilla sauce would be decadent, indeed! Don't forget to butter and flour the baking pan. Great cake!
