ingredients
- 4 tablespoons ghee or 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 large onions, chopped
- 4 large garlic cloves, crushed
- 14 ounces canned chopped tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1⁄2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 lb cremini mushroom, thickly sliced
- 1⁄2 teaspoon sugar
- salt
- 1⁄2 cup plain yogurt
- chopped fresh cilantro
directions
- Melt the Ghee in a large skillet or wok, over medium-high heat. Add the onion and saute, stirring frequently for about 5-8 minutes until they are golden.
- Stir in the garlic and saute another 2 minutes.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and their juice and mix. Stir in the turmeric, garam masala and chili powder and continue cooking for an additional 3 minutes.
- Add the mushrooms, sugar, and salt, to taste, and cook for about 8 minutes until they have given off their liquid and are soft and tender.
- Turn off the heat and stir in the yogurt, a little at a time, stirring very well so it doesn't curdle. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Sprinkle with cilantro and serve.

Reading the reviews, I was expecting a great recipe, but none of us enjoyed it. We ate it, but I wouldn't make it again. Like another reviewer, I also used about 1/3 of the butter called for and used low fat yogurt, but I don't think that was the problem, since I always use very little oil and low fat yogurt in recipes.

So very delicious. I was aiming for lower calories, so I used half the butter, and I don't think that took anything away from this yummy dish. I know it's supposed to be more of a side dish, but I ate it with brown basmati rice as a main dish. The fresh cilantro on top really added much, too. Thanks for a great recipe!

This is quite tasty and is easy to make as well. I cut down on the fat by not using butter and only a very tiny bit of oil and fat free yogurt. Not authentic, I know- but it still tasted great. I served this over a baked potato along with steamed spinach. Thanks for posting this tasty dish, we enjoyed it. I would make this again.
