Quick Naan (Bread Machine)

"This naan is ready in 40 minutes! I like this recipe better than Recipe #41503. For best results, follow directions carefully. They seem long but aren't, I am just describing what I saw on TV exactly. UPDATE: Made this with sour cream instead of yogurt. Much, much better!!"

directions

  • If the yogurt is cold, heat it for 15 seconds in the microwave.
  • Add ingredients to your bread machine according to the manufacturer's directions.
  • After 5 minutes, check your dough (see NOTE).
  • After another 5 minutes (10 minutes total in the machine) take the dough out and divide into 8 pieces. Turn each piece in flour, cover, and allow to rest on a tray for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat your oven to 500°F.
  • If you have a pizza stone, allow it to heat in the oven, otherwise, put heat-resistent metal cooling racks in the oven. Baking sheets do not work very well.
  • With your fingers, flatten each piece of dough into a tear-drop shape, 1/2 inch thick.
  • Moisten hands, then turn naan briefly in your hands to moisten it, and place it on the stone/rack; bake for about 4 minutes.
  • Brown tops using the broiler.
  • Wrap naan in a towel while you make the rest.
  • NOTE: Dough should be somewhat sticky, and you might get a small amount stuck to your finger. It shouldn't stick to the pan at all. If it isn't sticky enough, add 1 T water. If it sticks to the pan, add 1 T flour, till you reach the correct consistency.

  1. Made fantastic naan that was easy and authentic! It puffed up well in the oven and tasted even better fried on a non stick pan at a very hot temperature. I substituted 2 tsp sugar for the honey.

  2. Best naan we've made yet! Used sour cream as suggested. I was a little skeptical of the technique but it worked great. My dough felt very workable and not very sticky after 5 mins and I left it as is. Softest naan we've made. Made it in a cast iron with coconut oil so I could get it very hot. I'm sure it will be wonderful on the grill once it gets warm enough to cook outside. Thanks for the keeper!

  3. i am a bread idiot, and this was quick and easy. great recipe

  4. yum!!!!

  5. Nice recipe for naan bread. I made it half whole wheat and half all purpose, used the full dough cycle on my bread machine as I needed the time to work on other dishes for dinner. I used milk instead of water, omitted the honey and added 1/2 tsp of garlic powder as that's my favourite naan flavour. I used a baking sheet and it worked great, the naan rose a bit much so I had to squish it back down lol and because of time I browned the tops on a dry griddle on the stove but it still turned out quite lovely and my boys took it with cheese in between for sandwiches today :-). Thanks for the recipe :-) (ps. I used my homemade yoghurt which is almost a cross between yoghurt and sour cream and it was awesome)

  2. Excellent! I subbed Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream for the yogurt to make this vegan, and added some roasted garlic. I cooked the naan on the grill (2-3 minutes first side, about 1 minute second side). It turned out beautifully!

  3. I was skeptical about interrupting my bread machine after 10 minutes, but I must say the end result was delicious! I used sour cream instead of yogurt and added a few sesame seeds to the top prior to baking. I think I'll flatten it a bit more next time - and there certainly will be a next time! FYI - my machine has a loaf size selection & I used 2 lb which seemed to work fine. I did have to add another Tbs of water right away. My first time making naan & this recipe was perfect!

Hi .. The pic is of my beautiful son, born on 2/5/2005. His name is Tariq, meaning Bright Star. As I type this, he is blowing bubbles in his water cup and watching cartoons. He whined to get this water for 15 mins and now he won't drink it, he will only play with it. Sigh.. A few days ago he came up with this song, so sing along to the tune of "Old McDonald" : Old McTariq Laq Laq Laq E I E I OOOOOO LOL I thought it was the cutest thing :-) When I'm not running around after my son, or cleaning up the mess he makes wherever he goes, I cook and bake (my husband loves the blueberry muffins I make) and I love trying new recipes .. I also love to read, and collect sci-fi/fantasy novels .. I have over 500 books and still counting ..
