- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 medium head cabbage, red
- 1 medium onion, sweet
- 2 large apples
- 2 tablespoons bacon fat
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 cup sugar
- 1 cup vinegar
- 1 1⁄2 cups water
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 whole allspice
- 6 peppercorns
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
directions
- Remove heads from cloves, wash, core, and slice cabbage.
- Cut up onion Pare and slice apples.
- Combine cloves, cabbage, onion, apples, bacon fat, salt, sugar, vinegar, water, bay leaves, allspice, and peppercorns in a large sauce pan.
- Cover.
- Simmer for 1 hour and 30 min
- Make a paste of cornstarch and equal amounts of water.
- Stir into cabbage mixture.
- Cook until thickened.
