Oh my gosh! What a delicious recipe! I had an Oktoberfest dinner at my house and I used this recipe for my main entree. It turned out wonderful and cooking it in a crock pot made it very flavorful. I didn't have apples, so I didn't use them. I also used a Bavarian-style sauerkraut. Additionally, I used a pumpkin ale with nutmeg, cinnamon and a few other spices. I used the whole beer because I have a bigger crock pot. It was a hit and I know I'll be making this again.

I used one granny smith apple and only one pound of sausage as I am cooking for one. It was wonderful. Just the right combination of sour and tartness with a bit of sweetness. Great Recipe!

The fabulous smell of this dish drove me nuts all day. But I'm going to comment without stars because while its not a bad recipe in any way it turned out to be a bad mismatch for our family's tastes. If you want a recipe that mellows the sourkraut almost to being a "sweet and sour" dish you will love this recipe. But if you're accustomed to eating and enjoying kraut in all its savory strength then its not going to be what you are expecting from a sourkraut dish. The bacon, the beer, the caraway seeds -- that part was great. Maybe even the apples if I'd had any realy tart ones like Granny Smiths. But sweet sourkraut really did not work for us. Anyone who likes sweet and sour or who usually finds kraut too intense should try it. But its not for us.

Wow, this sure smelled great cooking. I used my crock pot on high for the 1.5 hours. It was just right. I used apple juice instead of beer so my kids wouldn't reject it and it was a good substitute. Loved the bacon in this. I also omitted caraway seeds as it's just not my favorite herb/spice, but I'm sure others would enjoy it. I served this with a baked potato and green beans. Thanks!
