"no Sausage?!?" Gravy for Biscuits and Gravy

"So what do you do when you are craving some yummy, comforting biscuits and gravy and there is no breakfast meat to be found? No sausage, no bacon to provide drippings upon which to build a cream gravy? No Sausage?!?!? You gain inspiration from 'Zaar, of course, and post your delicious results so others don't have to be in the same position. Start your meal by mixing and putting in the oven your favorite recipe for biscuits (mine is Recipe #77417). While the biscuits are baking, whip this up:"

  • Add seasonings, whisking constantly. Allow the gravy to come to a boil, still whisking. Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary.

  1. This was so good! It was my first time making gravy and it turned out fantastic. My picky husband and kids made sure there was nothing left! So I made some tweaks. Before starting the gravy, I fried a diced onion in a little bit of oil until browned. I then added the butter and flour to the pot and followed directions from there. I used almond milk instead of cow's milk, and once it was boiling, I threw in some pre-chopped grilled chicken and mixed it all together. Let it sit for a few minutes to thicken, then ladled it over biscuits. This was such a hearty, delicious breakfast. The kids want it again tomorrow morning!

  2. I just tried this recipe for breakfast and loved it! I was tired of my usual egg and toast, but didn't want a plain English muffin and then remembered seeing this recipe last night. I halved the recipe and added the sage/poultry seasoning and salt and pepper to taste and topped a toasted English muffin with about half the sauce. It definitely hit the spot. I never realized the seasoning I love so much in breakfast sausage is sage/poultry seasoning! I am saving the rest for my husband to try when he gets home from work. Thanks so much for sharing. Bravo!

  3. My family and i LOVED this recipe! Was a little iffy about using the chicken seasoning at first but it flavored it quite nicely! First no sausage recipe I have tried and had it actually turn out. I used sausage links and added them to this gravy... Fantastic!!

  4. Must try! You'll never go buy a packaged or can gravy again!!!! ??????

  5. This is the perfect gravy if you like regular biscuits and gravy, but are trying to go vegetarian. HOWEVER, I changed the recipe. I made it exactly as described here and didn't like it (had to throw it out). The way I made it next and to my liking was everything the same, EXCEPT - 1/4 tsp Pure Maple Syrup added to melted butter before adding flour, and 1/4 tsp poultry seasoning. The original called-for 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning was WAY too much, so the reduced 1/4 teaspoon makes it just right. It tastes just like regular sausage gravy (I used to make mine with maple sausage).

  1. ?? OMG!!! This was absolutely amazing!!! I did exactly as described. At first I was worried I read the directions wrong, because the paste was very little.. Then I poured the milk? and I was like oh no! So I said ok u I'll just keep whisking. Well what do u know it turned out puuuurfect. I was very impressed! Highly recommended site and recipe! Especially for a simple, last minute, no meat, easy & quick fix! ++++ 10 stars ??????????

I'm a stay at home mom with two lovely children, a wonderful husband, and 2 hungry roommates. I'm an artist by avocation, and am working to being one by vocation as well. * grins * Just to let everyone know, after a half hour discussion about it, the boys (DH and Roommate) have settled on ratings meanings. I reserve the right to bump up or down a half star a recipe based on the actual recipe and how easy it was, etc. etc. I have to admit, it's been a couple of years since I updated this text and in the meantime, my picky picky DD has flowered into a girl who enjoys California rolls, will give almost everything a try, and in general much less picky than the average 7 year old in this area. DS, at 2 and a half, asks for salad for lunch and then demolishes it. He's a weirdo. :) We try to be very honest and very descriptive with our reviews. And I fully appreciate the same from people reviewing my recipes. Not every family will like every recipe, and sometimes what you didn't like about a recipe, another family will love! :) I also try to be as nice and polite as possible in my reviews. I don't believe there is any reason not to. The only thing that really upsets me enough to be mean is when a poorly written recipe forces me to have to clean my kitchen. ***** - "Scout is not allowed to make this very often because it is highly addictive and will be inhaled on sight!" Dump Cakes, Sweet Salsa Chicken and Wasabi Peanuts are in this category. **** - "This is wonderful and we want to see it again fairly often, a new family favorite." *** - "This is good. We woud eat it again without any changes, but it's not our favorite." ** - "We did not like this very much, but we would eat it again if served it. It would be good if some changes were made. This was really not to our taste." * - "We would eat this again only with a lot of condiments to mask the taste." no stars - Means that I want to say something, but don't wish to post stars. This does not mean it is worse than a one star recipe!! :) I will only post public recipes that I have in fact cooked, and that my family has enjoyed - at least 3 stars on the above scale.
