This was a nice soup, I had it for lunch today. I used just 1 cup of red lentils (masoor dal) and 4 cups of water instead of 12. I stuck to 1 small onion, chopped, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds(did not use the cumin powder) and a small stick(the size of about 1/2 tsp) of cinnamon. I did not use a strip of kombu as I have no idea what it really is. I allowed it to come to 2-3 boils and then simmered on low for 45 minutes. Just before serving, I added in about 4 tbsp of cilantro and garnished the soup with about 2 tbsp cilantro(I used the leaves and the stick as well). I enjoyed this piping hot. It's a nice recipe to use when one wants to have really simple food. It was really good. Thank You.
