Whoopie Pies

"Authentic Pennsylvania Dutch recipe using BUTTERMILK! This used the shortening icing. Now, I love butter but can't imagine using any other icing (such as the marshmallow creme and butter icing in some recipes) if you're looking for an authentic whoopie pie. ENJOY!"

  1. This is the first time I have tried whoopie pies. I liked how you said it was authentic. If I'm trying something out for the first time I want to know its how it should be. I had to substitute live greek yoghurt for the buttermilk and used vegetable margarine instead of shortening as we have difficulties getting that in the UK. They are to die for! Thankyou for introducing me to such a great idea and I think they would be fantastic in lunchboxes as less messy than a frosted cupcake.

  2. I did'nt make it yet but i'm so exited that I found a authetic whoopie pie recipe. I like that you use an egg white in the frosting instead of using canned marshmallow cream

I am a transplant to Canada as of 1999, orginally from south central Pennsylvania - Pennsylvania Dutch country. I teach music in a private Montessori school in Ottawa, that capital of Canada. We live outside of the city in the woods with our three dogs. That's the newest pup in the picture. She is 18 months old. http://www.recipezaar.com/members/home/230846/DCP_0357.JPG We have a lovely cottage on a lake tucked away from the big city. Give me the commute any day! I am a cookbook addict though I've bought less since Zaar has arrived on the horizon! My favorites have to be the Cook's Illustrated books - I really love the scientific aspect of food and how it all works! <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/IWasAdoptedfall08.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
