ingredients
- 1⁄2 cup buttermilk or 1/2 cup sour milk
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 3⁄4 cup shortening
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1⁄2 cup cocoa
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 1 1⁄2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 1⁄4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1⁄2 cup boiling water

Chocolate fudge icing
- 1⁄2 cup margarine
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 lb powdered sugar
- 1 cup coconut
- 6 tablespoons milk
- 4 tablespoons cocoa
- 1 cup nuts, chopped
directions
- Disolve soda in milk and vinegar; set aside.
- Mix sugar and shortening until creamy then mix with eggs and vanilla.
- Sift flour with cocoa and baking powder.
- Mix dry and liquid ingredients together, except the food coloring and water should be added last.
- Bake at 375, for 15 to 20 minutes in a 9x13 pan.

Frost with chocolate fudge icing:
- Five minutes before cake is done, place margarine in saucepan; bring to boil, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat; add remaining ingredients.
- Beat well and spread on hot cake.
