    I can't recall where I got this recipe, but it is delicious and I've made it several times. I find that it takes quite a while for the water to boil down......but it is well worth it. Onions in Red sauce for Hot Dogs

    Ingredients:

    Directions:

    1. 1
      Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Saute sliced onion in the oil for 5 minutes, until onions are soft, but not brown.
    2. 2
      Add water, tomato paste, corn syrup, cornstarch, salt and red pepper flakes, and stir.
    3. 3
      Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
    4. 4
      Add vinegar.
    5. 5
      Continue to simmer for an additional 30 to 45 minutes or until most of the liquid has reduced and the sauce is thick.

      Makes about 1 cup.

      We eat hot dogs galore during the summer and I am always looking for new ways to prepare them or new toppings to try out. This sauce was really delicious and enjoyed a lot by my family at our most recent cook out! I plan to make up some of this and try canning it for the winter! With onions from the garden it should be delicious!

      This is good. I am finishing my second hot dog now. Times were: 5 minutes to chop onion. 5 minutes to saute. 45 minutes for the first simmer. 50 minutes for the second simmer.
