  • In a large pan put sunflower seeds and salt and just cover with water. Bring to a boil. Boil 5 minutes. Take 1/2 pan of drained seeds and finely chop in blender.
  • In large mixing bowl mix chopped mixture with flour. Add remaining whole drained seeds until seeds stick together. Make into 1 inch balls and flatten in hands. Mixture should be sticky.
  • Drop into hot frying oil until edges tan slightly. Take out and drain on paper towels. Do not over-fry.

  2. Something must be missing from this recipe. These cakes do not stick together. When we finally managed to get them into a crumbly ball, they fell apart in the oil. After ladeling out my deep-fried sunflower "mush," I let it cool and looked up a "Navajo Fry Bread" recipe. I added about 1 1/2 cups of flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, and 2/3 cup water. (The sunflower mixture subbed for the flour in the recipe.) They held up better this time around. These still weren't too popular. A few were tasted, but I had to throw almost all of them away.
