Dinette Cake

"This is a wonderful little cake you can use with either fruit or ice cream. It's also great by itself. I love it because I always have the ingredients on hand for a fast dessert."

  1. I have been using this recipe since I made my first pineapple upside down cake. This cake is the perfect, more dense, a bit heavier just enough to take the addition of the fruits and baking in a cast iron skillet. I have also used it every year for bake sales as cupcakes and these always go first. People even look for them each year! There is just something about the taste. Like Grandma used to make or something. Yes, a bit heavier cake but oh sooooo good. Perfect for fruit additions and for cupcake making. And the best thing of all? Throw it all in at once and mix away!

  2. This cake came out somewhat coarse, but had a good taste. I'll try it again to see if it comes out as coarse the next time. That is actually not very much of drawback as it was really good with strawberries and whipped cream. And it was very very quick to make. That alone makes it a keeper. Thanks, from Janet!

  3. I followed the recipe exactly, but this cake turned out too dry and dense for me. I'm sure I didn't over-mix it, so I'm not sure what the problem was. Everyone at the party really liked it ( hence the four stars), but I think I'll use my normal cake recipe next time. Thanks!

  4. I have been making this recipe for more years than I care to mention. Infact since I got my first Betty Crocker cookbook. It has a wonderful crumb and flavor and is the perfect size when you just want a little something.

  5. This is the perfect cake. I followed the recipe exactly, but found I did need to add a splash more milk to make the batter a little more pourable. Turned out excellent and so delicious! I am going to have to double the recipe next time - seconds were being asked for and I had none! My "go to" cake from now on when needing one in a pinch. Thanks so much for sharing!

Tweaks

  1. I did what one of the other reviewers did; used ww flour, and applesauce instead of the oil. It came out different, but I really love the texture! Will definitely make again.

  2. This is super fast and easy, not to mention delicious! My version probably turned out a bit differently, because I only had whole-wheat flour and subbed applesauce for the oil. Plus I don't have a sq. baking pan, so used a loaf pan. That way I can portion it out for myself better! This is so good plain and is delicious for tea!
