- 1⁄2 cup sugar
- 1⁄2 cup shortening
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 cup hot water, scant
- 2 1⁄2 cups sifted flour
- 1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1⁄2 teaspoon ginger
- 1⁄4 teaspoon clove
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt

Topping
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 cup nuts, chopped
directions
- Preheat oven to 350*.
- Cream shortening and sugar.
- Add egg, molasses and dry ingredients sifted together.
- Add hot water and beat until smooth.
- Pour in a greased 9x13 pan.
- Mix topping ingredients and sprinkle on top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes.
