Easy Baked Beans (Tastes Like You Slaved for Hours)

- 2 (16 ounce) cans pork and beans
- 1⁄2 lb brown sugar (1/2 box)
- 3 tablespoons mustard
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tablespoons ketchup
- 3 tablespoons bacon grease
- 1 (1 lb) package bacon
- 1 medium onion, chopped small
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
directions
- Fry the pan of bacon; remove the bacon and set aside.
- Keep 3 tablespoons of the bacon grease in the pan and sauté the onion until soft. Add garlic and sauté 2 minutes more. Cook beans in pot until well heated.
- Add all the ingredients to the beans, including the bacon grease, onion and garlic mixture.
- Blend well.
- Pour into 21/2 quart baking dish, or bean pot.
- Add the bacon strips to the top. Place in oven and bake at 450°F for 30 to 40 minutes. If the beans look like they have to much liquid, it is okay--it will thicken as it sits.

I made this today and they are excellent! I had the recipe scaled down for 4 cooked them as per recipe for 8, they were wonderful. Tastes as tho you really cooked these for hours, great recipe and simple to boot. I also used very cheap generic brand and you would never know I didn;t use the best brand available.Fabulous!

I have made this recipe a few times with some modifications, once because I had gotten collards in my CSA basket and wanted to make a Southern meal and once for a brunch (because brunch should always come with beans and cornbread). <br/><br/>These were my modifications: First, I followed other reviewers' advice and cut back on the sugar. Second, I am a vegetarian, so I used a generous amount of liquid smoke instead of bacon. Also, because I am a vegetarian, I used beans in tomato sauce (no pork).<br/><br/>This recipe is truly delicious and simple. I have a friend that has been begging me to make more since the time she first tried it 6 months ago. Yum! I'm planning on making two batches this weekend - one for the a potluck brunch and one to bring to a friend's Superbowl party.

We thoroughly enjoyed this recipe. However, we tweaked to our tastes; we don't like our food really sweet so we cut the brown sugar in 1/2 & for us it was the perfect balance of tart/sweet. Cut back bacon also; chopped & mixed in with everything. I didn't have 16 oz cans of beans but found it ok to add 2x14 oz in place of 1x16 oz; plenty of flavour from the sugar mixture still. Thanks for sharing!
