Down-South Style Green Beans

- 6 cups water
- 1 ham hock
- 2 tablespoons lard or 2 tablespoons bacon grease
- 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 onion, minced
- 1 lb fresh green beans, rinsed, trimmed and snapped into bite size pieces
directions
- Combine the water, ham hock, and lard in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add seasoning salt, salt, pepper, garlic and onion.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and add green beans and simmer covered for about 2 hours.
- You can choose to cook in a crock pot for 12 to 18 hours on low.
