1. This was really good! I had about 5 leftover grilled fresh kielbasa I used instead of the brats. The only thing I did differently was add some garlic powder and pepper to it along with an extra can of green beans to make it more of a main dish instead of a stew. The family said it reminded they thought it was kinda like a twist on tator tot casserole in flavor. You can't beat the speed that this goes together in and that you can come home after being gone for hours to a hearty comforting meal. I can see this going on the menu plan again!

 2. I made this recipe on 3/07/09 for mine and SO's dinner.I made the recipe with the following changes, for the brats a hot type was used. There was the same amount of green beans in the freezer, so those were used instead of the canned. Instead of the red bell pepper, some freeze dried was reconstitutied and those were used. I don't do cream of mushroom, so cream of chicken was used. Since there isn't a medium setting on my crockpot I cut it on low for 3 hours and 1 hour on high. I think the next time though, I'll cook it at least 5 hour on low. SO and I both really enjoyed this. Thanks for posting and, "Keep Smiling :)

 3. I made the recipe as written and it came out very thick, more like a casserole than a stew. It was delicious though. If you want it more then like a stew or soup, I would recommend adding a can of chicken broth as well, to thin it out.

 4. I made this recipe with the following alterations, after reading some of the other reviews. I used Jonsonville hot links with peppers instead of the bratwurst (drained well after browned and sliced). I used a fresh onion (sliced thinly and separated into rings). I used 4 cans of cream of mushroom soup, fresh green beans, and added NO water. I used about 3 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and added that during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Cooked on LOW for 7 hours

 2. I think this recipe has potential, but made as written, we thought it was missing something. I think it could benefit from using chopped onion instead of onion flakes and a couple of garlic cloves. Also, I thought it needed more cheese. The potato amount seemed out of proportion with the rest of the ingredients, so would probably use only 3 potatoes. Worth trying again with changes to suit our tastes. Thanks.

My rating system: (I don't like giving bad reviews, so if I don't like it, I'll just not review it.)

5 Stars OMG, this is one of the most amazing things I've ever eaten! I can't stop eating it, and I've eaten myself into a food coma.

4 Stars The recipe is wonderful as is. I can't think of a single improvement and I will most likely make it again.

3 Stars This needed a little *something*something*. I might make it again, but will add my own improvements if I do.

I love to eat! And I love to cook. I tend to take over the kitchen when I get in there. Even the dog knows the command get outta my kitchen! LOL. Cooking for other people and trying new recipes or foods is FUN! I have a small (but growing quickly!!) cookbook collection and one of my favorite things to do is to read recipes and plan meals. Rachael Ray, Horn of the Moon and Moosewood are favorites of mine.

We spend a lot of time outdoors camping, hiking and backpacking. Yup. I cook in the woods too! I've made deals with my hiking buddies... If they carry in my food, I'll cook for them. I recently published a backpacking cookbook.
