"Recipe from my Iranian mother-in-law. These moist hamburger-like beef patties remind me of White Castle burgers. Can be served wrapped in flat bread or alone a top basmati rice. Can be served hot, or room temperature. Great appetizer. Travels very well."

  • Peel and grate potatoes, set aside. Grate onion; mix with beef. Add grated potatoes, flour, salt, turmeric, and saffron and mix well by hand or food processor. Mix in egg until well combined.
  • Heat vegetable oil in skillet. Form meat mixture into oval patties and fry each side until well browned. Transfer to paper towel to drain and salt to taste.
  • Note: you may wish to mix saffron in a few tablespoons of water and add it to the mixture.
