I am always searching for interesting recipes to try out at the restaurant I work at for specials and your recipe was just the ticket to turn ordinary french toast into something special. everyone who ordered it loved it!! I did one slight modification, I used texas toast (slightly trimming off the crust) instead of regular bread and I added 2 tsp. of fresh orange zest to the egg mixture. I also premade these the night before. the grilling brought back the crunchiness of the vanilla wafers. we served them with a homemade orange syrup. thank you so much for sharing your recipe!!!!!

I was really surprised by the vanilla wafer/graham cracker crumbs idea, but my youngest daughter was interested, so we tried it. I used graham crackers, cause that's what I had. It was pretty good. We had it with butter and a sprinkling of powdered sugar and with butter and boysenberry syrup. We will probably make it again.

WoW!!! This was the best french toast :) Wonderful orange flavor! I did add alittle fresh orange zest and I sprinkled just a very light dash of ground cloves into the egg mixture. I also used recipe#25011 after toast was on the plate with our syrup. I have never thought of using crushed vanilla wafers before but MAN! thats a great idea. We loved this recipe!! :) Thanks so much for sharing the recipe!
