Because I used ingredients on hand, I opted to use a chopped fresh Granny Smith in place of dried. The result was a dense, moist, sweeter scone that did NOT require any additions (butter, curd, jam, etc). Spices upped the 'oomph' in this flavorful scone. Great with coffee. 5 Stars from toddlers to adults. No leftovers to save for later....

Yum! These were quick to throw together and were very delicious! I used a diced firm pear instead of apples because that's what I had and I would say it worked very well. I also subbed plain yogurt for the buttermilk and 1/2 c oatmeal for some of the flour to give these more tooth. Next time I will go ahead and cut the scones before baking because the only complaint from my crew was that they wanted more crispiness on the outside. Thanks for posting, this one is definitely a keeper :).

Well you have posted a TERRIFIC recipe again! I could not find dried apples (go figure) so I used Annacia's hint and chopped up an apple and then dried it with towels to make sure they did not cause the scones to get soggy. It worked! Perfect blend of spices (I did up the nutmeg just a bit as I love nutmeg). Using the applesauce I think is the gem in all of this recipe. The flavor of the scones is heavenly! So glad I tagged this in 1.2.3 Hit Wonders!
