Because I used ingredients on hand, I opted to use a chopped fresh Granny Smith in place of dried. The result was a dense, moist, sweeter scone that did NOT require any additions (butter, curd, jam, etc). Spices upped the 'oomph' in this flavorful scone. Great with coffee. 5 Stars from toddlers to adults. No leftovers to save for later....
- 473.18 ml all-purpose flour
- 118.29 ml brown sugar, packed
- 9.85 ml baking powder
- 2.46 ml ground cinnamon
- 1.23 ml ground nutmeg
- 1.23 ml ground ginger
- 0.59 ml salt
- 29.58 ml butter or 29.58 ml margarine
- 236.59 ml dried apple, chopped
- 118.29 ml unsweetened applesauce
- 59.14 ml buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 4.92 ml granulated sugar
- 0.59 ml ground cinnamon

- Preheat oven to 375 degrees; spray a large cookie sheet with nonstick.

- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt; mix well.
- Using a pastry blender or fork, cut in the margarine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the apples.
- In a small bowl, combine the applesauce, buttermilk and egg; mix well.
- Add to the dry ingredients; stir just until moistened.
- The dough will be sticky.
- Place the dough on the cookie sheet.
- With wet fingers, shape it into an 8-inch circle about 3/4-inch thick.
- In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over the top of the dough.
- With a sharp knife, score the top surface into 8 wedges, cutting about 1/4-inch deep.
- Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cut into wedges.
- Serve warm.
