Easy to make, especially for a long day of shopping.
- 1 lb sausage
- 6 cups water
- 1 bag dried split peas
- 3 potatoes, diced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1⁄2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper
- Combine all ingredients into slow cooker Cover.
- Cook on low for 12 hours.
This soup was just way too bland for us. While I did enjoy the addition of potatoes, I eneded up adding; Roasted garlic, a few dashes of hot sauce, boulin cubes, bayleaf, salt & extra pepper. This was also way too thick. I added about 2 or more cups of water. The changes I made, did help the recipe a lot. But I won't be making this again. sorry.
I was very pleasantly surprised that such a simple recipe could taste sooo good! I changed the sausage to a good-sized smoked turkey leg. This gave the soup a nice smoky flavor that was out of this world. I would add 2 additional cups of water, next time I make it, though; the soup is unusually thick. So basic yet so yummy. I was skeptical about using water instead of stock, but it had a wonderful flavor from all the other ingredients, especially the sausage--I used sliced kielbasa. The only drawback was that the meat came close to being too mushy. I added a bayleaf, 1/2 t seasoning salt and a dash of red pepper flakes. I was planning to blend it but the peas pureed themselves into a nice, thick broth. I cooked it on high for 4 hours. It pleased a 5 month-old, 3 year old, 8 year-old and two grown ups!
