Hot Fudge Sauce

"I'm giving this recipe up because I love this site so much. It's been in my family for three generations and I've never tried one I liked better. It gets very thick on cold ice cream."

directions

  • Melt the butter and chocolate over low heat in a heavy saucepan, stirring until smooth.
  • Stir in cocoa, sugar, cream and salt and then bring slowly to boil. My mom always said do not stir, but to dissolve the sugar I've found using a whisk works fine.
  • Remove from heat and blend in vanilla.
  • Serve warm.
  • May be reheated very slowly.

  1. I wanted a quick sauce so I could whip up some hot fudge sundaes, so decided to give this recipe a try. The only alteration I made was to use some bittersweet Lindt chocolate I had on hand, instead of the unsweetened baker's square called for in this recipe. I love the taste, but the texture, I found, really suffered from not being cooked enough. I followed the recipe and it just wasn't enough to dissolve the sugar--the sauce was very gritty. I fixed it by pouring the sauce into a large Pyrex measuring cup and microwaving it on low for a few minutes, whisking often. Once the sugar has dissolved and the sauce had a satiny texture, it was absolutely delicious and made for wonderful sundaes; I will make a double batch next time. I do recommend, though, that when preparing this sauce, it be tasted before removing from the heat to ensure that it's smooth and that the sugar has completely dissolved. Thanks for posting this!

  2. I made this last night for dessert to go with brownies and vanilla ice cream, this was easy and I knew what was in it (no processed ingredients). This also tasted great. Thanks for sharing this recipe I will be using this again for sure!

  3. YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY!!! this was super quick and easy to make. I didn't have unsweetened chocolate so I used semi sweet and whole milk. Turned out great thank you!

  4. I just made a double recipe of this and it's amazing! I of coarse did not look in my cupboards before making it, so did not have enough cocoa. In a panic I used 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips cause that's what I had. It turned out perfect and was not too crazy sweet! I only used 1 tsp. vanilla because of using the milk chocolate. So happy I made this great recipe old fashioned ice cream parlor hot fudge sauce, thanks for posting!

  5. Tripled (yes, tripled LOL) beautifully - this stuff is THE BOMB! OMG, made a BIG BATCH 'cause company's coming next weekend & we may have to make more! Goes GREAT with our banana ice cream & wet walnuts, vanilla ice cream, cherry ice cream, pretzel sticks... Delicious! BTW, used Ghirardelli bittersweet chips instead of unsweetened chocolate (what I had on hand) & Hersey's Special Dark cocoa & it is MIND BLOWINGLY delish! Clean Plate Club, THANK YOU for posting this super keeper! Deserves more than 5 stars!
