Caramel Cookies

"A simple slice and bake cookie. You can frost these or dust with powdered sugar or just leave plain. Can also be made and frozen. Just slice and bake when thawed."

• Yields: 60-70 cookies

ingredients

• 2 cups brown sugar
• 1⁄2 cup butter
• 1⁄2 cup shortening
• 2 eggs
• 3 cups flour
• 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
• 1⁄4 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1 tablespoon water
• 1 teaspoon vanilla

directions

1. Mix sugar, butter, and shortening.
2. Add eggs and beat until light and fluffy. Sift and add dry ingredients.
3. Add water and vanilla.
4. Divide dough in half and form two rolls. Chill overnight. Slice cookies 1/2 inch thick.
5. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
