  1. In a very large bowl, cream butter with sugar.
  2. Beat in eggs, then chocolate and vanilla.
  3. Beat in milk.
  4. In another bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt.
  5. Beat into chocolate mixture and then stir in dates and pecans.
  6. Turn batter into a greased and floured 9 X 13-inch baking pan.
  7. Bake cake in a 350F oven about 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until cake tests done with a toothpick.
  8. Transfer to a rack to cool.
