American Goulash

"Growing up in Boston, I never knew that this 50's "once-a-week-at-home dinner" and "once-a-week-at-school lunch" was a regional dish! I still make this probably once every 2 weeks. Easy, cheap and comfort food all rolled into one huge pot! (It is always called American Chop Suey here, but while I was living in LA friends called it Goulash - so I've compromised!)"

Questions & Replies

  1. I think the times given for prep and cook are accurate - about 10 minutes to dice the onions and peppers, assemble ingredients, open cans of tomatoes and sauce. 20 minutes to brown beef, onions and peppers, add all other ingredients; while boiling pasta for 11 minutes. About 3 minutes to combine and simmer a minute or 2.

  2. My cooking skills are lacking....so when do you add all the added ingredients? Do you put them in when browning the ground beef - that's what I assume...thanks

  3. What do you serve as a source de with this?

  4. Can macaroni be added dry about 30 min before serving

  5. How long does it actually take to make this? ?

  1. Good basis for goulash. Tips others had such as Worcestershire really help. Only one error in recipe,,,,and a BIG error. Do NOT rinse the pasta after cooking. The starch on the cooked macaroni help allow the sauce to cling to it. Pasta is only rinsed if making a cold salad.

  3. American Chop Suey. My favorite food of all time. I make it with spaghetti sauce instead of the diced tomatoes/tomato sauce on occasion. They call it goulash in the Midwest too. Mushrooms and a stiff shot of garlic and Italian seasonings make great additions too. Way better the next day with a chunk of butter added. Wicked good!

  4. My family loves this recipe. We like it best when I omit the pasta and spoon the goulash over a bowl of mashed potatoes.

  5. I've always heard of goulash but I have never eaten it before until last night. I made this last night and my daughter and I thought it was very good! It was so simple and quick to make. The only thing that i changed was the BELL PEPPERS! Believe me we are not finicky eaters around here except for BELL PEPPERS(LOL) so of course I left them out and I did grate in 2 cloves of garlic. I was too tired last night to grate the cheese so we ate without and it was fine that way but tonight I look forward to adding the cheese. By the way this will feed an army! It made a big pot full! Thanks for sharing this recipe I will make it again and again i'm sure! =)

Tweaks

  1. I added v8 juice instead of tomato sauce. I tripled the recipe because I have 6 eating and growing boys love to eat! The left overs are always amazing. My family has never eaten this meal so tonight is the first time I grew up on this stuff it is one of my favorite meals.

  2. Don't rinse the pasta!!

  3. I make this all the time, with just a couple changes. Instead of the tomatoes I use Italian Sausage spaghetti sauce, and mix with 1 small can of hot enchilada sauce. Comes out great every time!

  4. I'm from Texas and we also call this goulash with the exception of using a couple of tablespoons of chili powder instead of the garlic salt. Very Good.

  5. We call it Goulash in the South as well, just a couple of modifications to give it a different twist. This is great for a quick easy dinner, I omitted the green pepper and used rotel instead of tomatoes and add a can of pinto beans. Great one dish meal.
