ingredients

  • 1 12 lbs beef stew meat or 1 1/2 lbs chuck roast, 1 inch cubes
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 (2 1/4 ounce) envelope beefy onion soup mix (such as Lipton)
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

directions

  • Heat oil in large skillet over medium- high heat. Season meat with salt and pepper, and sear as many sides of the meat as possible, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside.
  • In medium-sized stockpot, stir beef broth, soup mix, and 1/2 cup water until combined. Add meat, stir, cover, and cook over LOW heat (simmer), for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Do not allow the meat to boil, or it will become tough.
  • In small bowl, add cornstarch and remaining 1/2 cup water and mix until smooth. Drizzle into pot and bring to low simmer while stirring, for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens into a gravy.
  • Serve over white rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes.
  • NOTE: This gravy finishes on the salty side, which it needs to be when serving over your choice of starch. I have found it comes out just perfect to our tastes every time.

  1. Great comfort food. It was fork-tender and the sauce was wonderful. Thanks for sharing this great keeper.

  2. Midwest comfort food at it's best. My pic doesn't do it justice. Mine wasn't too salty. I did use reduced sodium broth.

  3. I really enjoyed this recipe. It is like beef stew without the vegetables added. It took my meat a little longer to get tender, probably because it was still partially frozen when I started browning it. Served over roasted garlic mashed potatoes. A very good "comfort food" meal. Thanks for sharing! Made for FYC tag game.

  4. Delicious, easy to prepare, and quite filling. We all loved this. Like a few other reviewers, I used low-sodium broth, and I thought it was perfect (not too salty). So I'll use low-sodium broth next time, too. I served the Stewed Beef and Gravy over mashed potatoes, but I imagine it would be equally delicious over white rice. Thanks, Chef Potpie.

  5. YUM! Comfort food to the max! The beef was super tender and the gravy was delicious! An added bonus was the delicious aroma while cooking. I love when you can do a little prep and then let the dinner cook on its own for a longer period of time. I served this over mashed potatoes and it was a hit. The gravy was delish! I used low-sodium beef broth and didn't find the gravy to be salty at all. I did, however, add too much salt to my beef. So, next time I will omit adding salt to the beef. Thank you so much for posting this comfort food gem!
