Slow Cooker Cabbage Roll Casserole

"Yummy and less work than the real cabbage rolls. There is no rice in this recipe, because I don't like rice in my cabbage rolls."

Been making this, or my variation, for years--even before I owned a Crock Pot/slow cooker. Used jarred spaghetti sauce instead of tomatoes and tomato sauce.

I had half a head of cabbage left after making soup, and looked for something to make that did not requite complete cabbage leaves. I made about half the recipe, using a pound of ground turkey, as that was the size of the frozen roll. I put the turkey in the crockpot, then sprinkled on half the spices and onion, and mixed it together (more or less), then topped with the cabbage, put in the rest of the spices and onion and tossed together. I used one can of tomatoes and an 8 ounce can of tomato sauce, I think it could have used another can of sauce, or more tomato. I used my 5 qt crockpot, and after three hours the meat was cooked and the cabbage was tender-crisp. I was really hungry and it was quite tasty. I turned off the pot at that point, as the cabbage will continue to soften. Not the most attractive dish, but tasty.

My 3 kids and I all loved this recipe. The only tweak I had to make due to ingredients on hand was for the sauce I only had one 8oz can of tomato sauce so added a small can of V-8. We loved it so much I would make it that way each time.

Tasty and very easy! I would increase the meat to 1.5 to 2 lbs, increase the garlic, and increase the tomato sauce to 30 oz. Took about 6 hours in my crock pot. When they say a small head of cabbage they mean a small head! I got a large head (only thing my store had) and could only fit 3/4 of it into my big crock pot. It was a little soupy, but the soupy part tasted nice so I ate it with a spoon.

Really nice recipe. Made as written - flavour of the rolls but without all the work. Only change would be to add more garlic and maybe some Italian type seasoning next time is all.
