Gran's Favorite Chocolate Cake

"My great-great aunt's chocolate cake recipe. My grandmother contributed it to a church cookbook, and I can hardly make out the ingredients for all the chocolate spatters on the page!"

  • Cake:.
  • Place flour, sugar and salt in mixing bowl; set aside.
  • Bring butter, oil, water and cocoa to a boil; add to flour mixture and beat well.
  • Add beaten eggs, soda, buttermilk and vanilla; combine well.
  • Pour into greased 13x9 pan and bake at 350 for 25 minutes or until done. Frost with Fudge Icing.
  • Icing:.
  • Bring to boil butter, sugar and milk for 1 1/2 minutes; remove from heat.
  • Add marshmallows and chocolate chips; mix until melted. Cool, then add vanilla.
  • Spread over slightly warm cake.

  1. Although it was a very nice cake, it did not take 25 minutes to bake properly. And after another 5 minutes it still fell apart. I think it needs 40-45 minutes to bake. The edges were properly baked though, and that was very good, but the more I baked it the more the edges got a littl on the overdone side.
     
  2. This recipe makes a yummy, fudgy cake -- just the way the kids like it. The icing tasted a little too chocolately for me, so I added an extra 1 cup of marshmallows and it was then just right for my taste. It's a cake I will be making again. Thanks for posting, Klyn!
