Dewberry Pie

"This is a very easy and delicious berry pie. Since dewberries are related to the blackberry, feel free to substitute. Dewberries are plentiful "where I come from" and this is an old family recipe."

directions

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Line 9" pie pan with half the pastry.
  • Combine berries, sugar, flour and lemon juice (being careful not to mash berries).
  • Spoon berry mixture into pie shell, and dot with butter.
  • Cover with top crust and slash in several places to allow steam to escape. (I usually brush top crust with a slightly beaten egg white).
  • Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue baking for 30 to 40 minutes, or until browned.

  1. I've made this about 10 times. I don't tweak, I follow it to the letter. Fantastic! Don't forget the egg wash. And if the edge gets dark too fast, protect it with foil.

  3. This pie was absolutely scrumptious! I used dewberries that I had picked and frozen. The pie had the perfect touch of sweetness and was super easy to make. I made the mistake of trying to cut the pie before it completely cooled, and my top crust sort of fell apart. After being completely cooled, the pie had a nice thick filling. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  4. I found a huge dewberry patch on one of my bike rides and went back and picked 4 gallons in a couple of hours. I have been experimenting with different cobbler recipes because I didnt think I could do a pie. Well, I was wrong! This is a simple pie recipe and even with store bought pie crusts, was just delicious! This will be my go to recipe going through these berries! Thanks for sharing!

  5. I had made this pie about a week ago when we found mounds of wild dewberries along our fence line. I added an extra cup of berries and a 1/4 cup of sugar because all my pie pans are deep. I also sprinkled a light coating of sugar over the brushed egg white on the crust. It was one of the best fruit pies I have ever had. The recipe is simple, but very tasty. It helped picking the berries at their peak, too. I would also recommend have a pizza stone or cookie tray on the lower over shelf to collect any spillage from the bubbly berries. Enjoy!
