Chicken Sate (Nasi Goreng)

"Chicken saté is as Dutch as Chicken Tikka Masala is British! Due to the colonial connection of the Netherlands with Indonesia, Nasi Goreng is as common as a Sunday roast. And the Dutch use sambal and ketjap manis as everyday as the Brits use mustard or Worcestershire sauce. Enjoy this chicken sate with fries! (Best marinated for a few hours or overnight.)"

directions

  • Dice the chicken into bite sized pieces.
  • Mix together the dry spices, garlic, ginger, sugar, and sambal . Add the chicken and mix to coat. Leave to marinade in the fridge for as long as you have time for, (min 1 hr but best overnight).
  • For the Sate Sauce:

  • Heat all the ingredients over low/medium heat. Add more or less of one or the other until you are happy with the balance of flavors and the consistency.
  • Skewer the chicken onto metal or wooden skewers. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water beforehand, this prevents the wood from burning during the cooking process. This should yield 6-8 skewers, 3 each as a main, or 2 each as a starter.
  • Place skewers on the barbie and grill, so that they are not touching. Cover grill. Grill chicken until cooked through, 6 to 8 minutes, turning once. or fry in a non-stick pan or grill pan in coconut oil. Turn often until the juices run clear.
  • Serve smothered in sate sauce with lime wedges, Dutch style, with chips! (Fries).

  1. Loved this! The only reason I dropped a star is because the ingredients for the sauce are listed, but not the directions! Happily I know how to make a sauce, and what a delicious one. I didnt do the chicken on skewers, but cooked the chicken in the pan. Delicious, thank you, made for Benelux, Susies World Tour 2019, FeedBags

I HATE to see people join the site, have no published recipes, but rag on another cook in a review on a recipe they haven't even tried or didn't follow. Oh, and I hate cilantro, too. :)
