- one 12-ounce bag dried cranberries
- 3⁄4 cup candied ginger
- 1 (750 ml) bottle red wine (preferably one with a strong, bold flavor like shiraz or pinotage.)
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 3⁄4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons ground cardamom
- 1 tablespoon whole cloves, stuck into a slice of orange peel
- 1⁄2 cup orange liqueur (cointreau, grand marnier, etc.)
- 1⁄4 cup brandy (apple brandy, if you've got it)
- 2 tablespoons orange zest (about 1/2 of a large orange)
directions
- Thinly slice the candied ginger.
- Grate (zest) the peel of 1/2 of a large orange.
- Pour half of the bottle of wine into a saucepan, add all other ingredients.
- Simmer over very low heat, stirring occasionally and adding more wine as liquid level gets low.
- When the bottle of wine is empty and the liquid has mostly evaporated, remove from heat and serve warm or cold.
