Walking Apples

"This is a great snack that we often enjoy when taking a walk or going on a road trip. They can be a little messy, but they are delicious and my kids love them. Be creative. We like Granny Smith apples best, but use what you like. The amounts and ingredients are a little vague, but you get the idea. The recipe says to core the apples, but to leave the bottoms in tact. We just core them through, but that's why they are a little messy. I might try placing all the filling ingredients in a plastic bag or cake decorating bag and squeezing it into the cored apple. We love these take-along treats. UPDATE: Turn these into a goulish treat by partially inserting a juicy gummy worm!"

  1. I don't understand how this can be 94 calories, even without any of the optionals.

  2. Good little snack. I don't think you can wrong with any of the optional ingredients.

  3. I've been walking on my own since the tender age of 10 months. This just made it a lot more entertaining.

  4. Chose this to make for PAC Spring '08. What a neat snack, whether at home or on the run! so quick and easy. I used Gala apples with PB, choc. chips, granola, some cinnamon and a hint of honey. I used a chopstick to push the mixture into the cored apple. The kids liked this. In fact the 5 yo had a fit when the other child took 2 bites of the apple (I made one for now.) Guess I have to make more! Edited to add: This made it into my Top Fav's of 2008 book. We've made this many times since.

  5. We love this! My 8 year old had it as a snack and has asked for it twice more, in the same day! I made one for him with a braeburn apple, peanut butter, chocolate chips, and a little honey. I used WI's suggestion and poked the stuff down with a chopstick. I made one for myself with the same stuff as ds', except I added craisins to mine. Really good, easy, and relatively healthy with a little dose of "treat" :)

My passions: faith, family, food, and anything family history related. Almost nothing I like more than to chase headstones of my dearly departed ancestors. I've been working on a family cookbook for almost 2 years. (Need to figure out how I want to actually print it.) Enjoy learning about how what I grew up eating relates to my ancestors from Croatia and Alsace primarily. Enjoy following and forming new traditions within the walls of my home. Some would say I lead a very boring and mundane life. I would say it's just what I ordered. I have the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom - which is what I truly love. Feel it's the best calling anyone could ever have. I've truly been blessed!
