Qishr - Yemeni Ginger Coffee

"A very different kind of coffee to what many of us are used to! Qishr is a traditional spiced coffee drunk in Yemen. Drink in small coffee cups such as espresso cups or as we call them in Arabic ' Finjaan'. Adjust the sugat to taste but in Yemen it is drunk SWEET!"

• Ingredients: 4
• Yields: 4-6 small cups
• Serves: 4-6

ingredients

• 1 cup cold water
• 6 teaspoons medium roast ground coffee
• 6 teaspoons sugar
• 2 teaspoons ground ginger

directions

1. Place water in a long handled Arabic coffee pot, or a small saucepan.
2. Add remaining ingredients.
3. Over medium heat bring this mixture to a boil. Remove from heat until the bubbles disappear. Return to boiling.
4. Repeat this process 3 times. Pour into cups & serve hot.

I made one large cup using Corta's Coffee and a 1/2 tsp of ginger which produced the perfect strength for my taste. I love Arabic coffee and wish I had a beautiful Arabic coffee set. Be that as it may, my trusty kitchen pot did the job if somewhat less elegantly. I think what I like most about it is that it really made for just sitting and sipping while chatting with friends. I suppose that one could gulp it down but then you would lose soft pleasure and nuance of slowly savoring each sip.

This was so good! I never had ginger in my coffee before, but this was really awesome! I did find the coffee a little too sweet, but it was tempered by the ginger, so I liked that too.

Thank you for sharing this lovely recipe Um Safia. I really enjoyed this spicy, spicy coffee. It was so delicious, thick, sweet and spicy. Ginger is one of my favorite flavors, needless to say, I was in flavor heaven. Made exactly as written, wouldn't change a thing. I also made it in my trusty little iron pot, worked well.
