Recipe by Happy Harry #2
Creamy and soothing with just a hint of cinnamon. Check it out and you will find that it is actually healthy for you. Another great Andrew Weil,MD recipe.(UPDATE-2006) It has been pointed out that this recipe does not live up to its name. I posted it as it was printed and although it does not meet low carb standards, it is a very delicious drink.

The title of this recipe is very misleading since it it NOT low carb. The actual nutrition information for this recipe follows: 315.75 calories 6.4g fat 5.2g sat fat 57.8g carb 45.8g sugar 7.7g fiber That's 50.1 impact carbs. Now, provided that those persons preparing this delicious cocoa drink both servings, then those numbers can be taken at face value -- otherwise, divide them in half if you want the 8oz serving. To compare with a common beverage that we all agree is high in sugar, let's look at coca-cola 12 oz can serving: 143 cal (half the calories) 0g fat 0g sat fat 39.9g carbs (25% less carbs) 39.9g sugar (5.9g less than cocoa) 0g fiber That's 39.9 impact carbs. A whole can of coke is lower in carbs than this "low-carb" cocoa. Suggestions for people viewing the recipe who are actually looking for LOW CARB recipes, instead of 12 oz of milk, substitute 13oz water plus either one oz heavy cream or half and half. Just this one substitution will change the counts to the following: heavy cream | half and half 257.75 cal | 196.75 cal 13.3g fat | 6.1g fat 9.3g sat fat | 4.8g fat 39.1g carb | 39.5g carb 26.3g sugar | 26.3g sugar 7.7g fiber | 7.7g fiber - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 31.4 impact | 31.8 impact carb That's still pretty high, but better than coke's 39.9 and much better than the original cocoa's 50.1. To lower the counts even more drastically, in addition the milk substitution, also substitute the same amount of Splenda for the sugar. The counts follow: heavy cream | half and half 173.75 cal | 112.75 cal 13.3g fat | 6.1g fat 9.3g sat fat | 4.8g fat 16.9g carb | 17.3g carb 1.1g sugar | 1.1g sugar 7.7g fiber | 7.7g fiber - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 9.2 imp carb | 9.6 impact carb When compared with the original count of 50.1 impact carbs, there's no contest. Now, if you're like many people who don't like the flavor of Splenda, then try a mix of half sugar and half Splenda -- that usually fixes the flavor discrepancy.
- 4 tablespoons cocoa powder (I like dutch cocoa)
- 2 tablespoons sugar (Splenda changes the taste)
- 4 tablespoons filtered water
- 12 ounces 1% low-fat milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1⁄2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 pinch cinnamon
