Joan's Ultimate Appetizer

"This is my mother's appetizer that I upgraded to match my tastes. It is a very fast and easy recipe that will always be polished off at parties. It is best served warm so keep it covered, even better covered with warmed cloth napkins. This recipe does not do well reheated as it dries out in the oven or gets mushy in the micro. Please use "bacon bits" or the cheap version. Real bacon lacks the salty crunchy flavor that the bacon bits have. I have tried all the versions of brand name and non for the ingredients and really it doesn't matter so this can be a cheap appetizer if you need it. (don't try black pepper or chili powder, it does doesn't work!)"

ingredients

  • 2 (680.38 g) can crescent rolls (or one can. Don't actually know can size, they only come in one size)

  • 340.19 g package cream cheese (any version of fat, the medium size package)
  • 4.92-9.85 ml cayenne pepper

directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Make sure the cream cheese is room temp or it won't spread.
  • Unroll the crescent rolls making one large sheet out of the whole can.
  • Spread 1/2 of the cream cheese evenly over the top.
  • Sprinkle cayenne pepper (if wanted) evenly over the cream cheese. (don't over do it).
  • Sprinkle the bacon bits evenly over the cream cheese.
  • Roll up the whole thing starting on the long side.
  • With a sharp knife cut the roll into 1 inch pieces.
  • Unroll the other can and repeat earlier steps or use all of the cream cheese on the one roll. (gooey wonderfulness!).
  • Place the cut sides up on a cookie sheet and bake until lightly golden. Sample one and decide if it needs more cayenne pepper on the top.
  • Serve and enjoy!

  1. The amounts given in this recipe are fuzzy to say the least ~ In my area crescent rolls come in 8-ounce cans & cream cheese is also in 8-ounce packages, while the small jar of bacon bits is 3-ounces! All that being the case, I used 1 (8-ounce) can of crescent rolls (for 12 rolls), 1 (8-ounce) package of low-fat cream cheese, less than half of the 3-ounce jar of bacon bits, & 1/2 teaspoon of the cayenne pepper! All of that gave me some very, very tasty munchies that were plenty for 4 of us (along with a few other munchies)! I'd really like to have given this recipe the full 5 stars, but the recipe really does need to be re-written so that the amounts reflect what actually is available out there, & also so that the Nutrition Facts are more realistic! Hang in there, 'cause with munchies as tasty as this one, you're sure to get the recognition you deserve! [Made & reviewed in New Kids on the Block tag]

i'm a 28 year old lab tech who works evenings thus creating unusual eating habits. i eat boring healthy things during the week and (try to ) unleash my creative cooking skills on the weekends. i admit that some nights during the one am or even 2am hr i am drawn to make fantastical food creations which only sometimes taste as good as they sound. i admit, i am a foodie and really do enjoy talking food with people. i hope to one day take real cooking classes and learn how to chop and dice properly. my passion is food but my skill/knowledge level is that of a youngester. Zaar has really opened my eyes to just how many ways there are to make one simple food and that there is a large world outside my betty crocker cookbook
