Biscuits

"This is a foolproof recipe. The dough can be made up in the morning and placed in the refrigerator until evening when they are ready to be rolled out and cut."

  1. Very good!! I am so pleased with this recipe because I usually fail at making biscuits and this recipe sure turned out GREAT!! I didn't have buttermilk, so I used1 cup milk with 1 T. vinegar... thanks for posting!!

  2. I decided to sub 1/4 c of the flour with whole wheat flour. It worked just fine and next time I'll try 1/2c. I increased the baking powder to 1T and made the butter version which resulted in a rich, fluffy biscuit everybody enjoyed.

  3. Made this with coconut oil and almond milk. I doubled the baking powder, that worked well. Biscuits turned out delicious and flaky, just like a biscuit should be. However there was a coconut fragrance to the biscuits that was a little off-putting for some things (made it with chicken a-la-king). I would suggest using refined coconut oil instead of the virgin coconut oil unless you want a coconut-scented biscuit :D

  4. I wanted to make my mom's family recipe for chocolate gravy and didn't know we had can biscuits. I also couldn't find the other recipe I had for biscuits. It's a good thing to! I love these biscuits even better! I, like most people that wrote a review, just dropped them onto a cookie sheet instead of rolling them. They was very flaky, fell apart easily and was wonderful! I will have to bookmark this and use it from now on.

  5. Made these tonight on a rainy, cold, blustery eve. I upped the baking powder to a tablespoon and used vinegared milk since I didn't have buttermilk. I added the milk bit by bit and ended up not using all of it, probably due to the moisture in the air. Got lazy and made drop biscuits instead of rolling them out and they turned out marvelously. Light and fluffy and just wonderful. Will make again!

  1. Wonderful recipe! After reading the reviews, I followed the advice of 1 reviewer and increased the baking powder to 1 Tblsp. The dough was also pretty wet for me after adding the liquid so I sifted an additional 1/3 cup of flour in (I didn't have any self rising flour) and that did the trick. I used butter instead of crisco. They turned out light, fluffy and baked to a beautiful golden brown. This will definitely be my biscuit recipe from now on! Thanks for sharing!

My passions are photography and cooking (a good combination to have a 'zaar!) I try to photograph every recipe I review. My family sometimes wishes we could just sit down to eat at night without first having to take pictures of what we are eating! I've been cooking for a long time and recently started baking from scratch. I have been a member at 'zaar for quite a few years and my tried-and-tried recipes come mainly from my favorite chefs here. I am dabbling in OAMC and pantry cooking and do a lot of baking due to my boys' food allergies. We follow the Feingold Program, an alternative to ADHD medications. Feingold eliminates food additives such as artificial flavors and colorings, synthetic sweeteners such as Equal and the petroleum-based preservatives such as BHT, BHA and TBHQ (ewww!!) You can find more information on the Feingold program by visiting the website at http://www.feingold.org. I have become a much better cook since starting the program two years ago and have become somewhat of a food snob because of it. I am a mom first and for-most. I also work with families who lose a child at or before birth. *I was formally mississippimorning.*
