Quaker Punch

"Quakers abhor violence, and many abjure alcohol, although most believe in 'temperance' rather than 'abstinence'. However, they have no objections to double entendres. This is a lovely, refreshing summer time drink. I made it by the gallon for an August wedding last year and it was a big hit."

directions

  • Bruise the mint.
  • Add the ginger and teabags.
  • Pour over the boiling water, cover and steep for 6 or 7 minutes.
  • Strain and discard the solids.
  • Meanwhile, heat the remaining water and sugar just until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Mix with the tea brew.
  • Add the juice of the lemons and oranges, and strain.
  • Serve chilled, over ice.
  • (I don't mind chunky drinks, so I don't bother to strain it the second time).

  1. Very refreshing drink. I didn't have fresh orange juice so I used concentrated OJ and it still came out excellent. To give it a kick, I added some pineapple rum and boy it is soooo good. Thank you for the recipe.

  2. I wish I could give this recipe ten stars! I used Earl Grey tea bags and lemons from my tree. I love the hint of ginger taste. For me, this is the perfect ides tea recipe. Many thanks.

  3. This makes a refreshing drink for a hot summer day. I used 4 regular size tea bags, 2 lemons instead of the 3. The drink was sweetened with Splenda instead of sugar. Everyone loved it, going back for seconds. There were no leftovers on this! :)

  4. What a great combination, the best of orange juice and iced tea in one! I let my tea steep until quite strong but you could certainly adjust that to your taste. Mine didn't come out quite as orange as in the picture but I expect this depends on how much juice you can squeeze out of the fruit. I absolutely adored the flavour combination and will be making this again as a different summer drink. Make sure you save a bit of mint to garnish the drink with!

  5. This is TERRIFIC! Wonderful flavor combination and just sweet enough! I followed the recipe pretty much exactly- I used 2 tsp Assam black tea rather than tea bags, 7 Tbs bottled organic lemon juice (because lemons were selling for a super-high price for whatever reason at the store), and used Sucanat rather than sugar. All ingredients were organic and I used filtered water. I didn't strain. The tea flavor is very mild and this tastes more like a fruit drink (a punch, I guess?) than an iced tea, which is nice. The dominant flavors are orange and mint, but the ginger, tea and lemon are key hints of flavor. Very refreshing and not over-sweetened (so many drink recipes are I find). Absolutely spectacular flavors- everything combines together so perfectly! I love this! Thanks for posting!!

I love to garden, both perennials and vegetables. I am always looking for recipes to fiddle with, especially good simple vegetable dishes. I try to use organic ingredients as much as possible.
