Mongolian Grill Style Mongolian Sauce

"If you love the Mongolian Sauce at your favorite Mongolian Grill restaurant, then you'll love this recipe. The original version was a bit too sweet for me, so I just reduced the brown sugar to 1/4 cup instead of 1/2 cup."

  • Warm oil in sauce pan. Add ginger and garlic, stirring quickly to avoid scorching. Add water, soy sauce and sugar allowing sugar to dissolve. Bring sauce to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer until thickens to desired consistency.
  • If using to brown with meat, add to meat once meat is cooked thoroughly. Simmer until thick.
  • If using with veggies, add ¼ to ½ c to veggies to stir fry.

Questions & Replies

  1. I can't wait to try this recipe. I really miss Mongolian BBQ since I moved away from my favorite restaurant. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to cook the complete meal? What kind of meat should I use? The chefs used to cook thin strips of meat and veggies on a huge flat iron circular grill. The sauce seemed to cook with it, but this recipe says to add it after the meat is done. Will any cut of meat do? Do I just brown it in oil and then simmer it in this sauce? Sorry to be so dense, but I'd like to give this recipe every chance at success.

  2. Wouldn't Olive Oil be the wrong flavor for Asian food? Other than Soy, where are the other Asian flavors?

  1. I disagree with reducing the sugar. I tried it with 1/4 cup, but after tasting added the additional 1/4 cup.

  2. I loved it but added some cornstarch eventually to thicken it. When I do it again, I will cut back on the amount of soy sauce to water ratio or use low sodium sauce.

  3. This recipe is perfect for mong bbq at home. I made the recipe exactly as indicated, oh wait...instead of powder ginger i used a thumb size of fresh ginger and grated it. Everyone loved the sauce, for me it was good for 5 servings. (3 people and two of them got up for seconds) I am so happy to have found this recipe very good. So good i had to login and rate the recipe 5 stars! Im shocked it only has 2 ratings. I plan on making this sauce weekly. Along with this sauce i also left out sesame seeds, sesame oil, and chili oil out in addition to this homemade sauce so that people can add different flavors to there own bowl. It was a success
