  • 14 cup butter
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 loaf oval rye bread or 1 loaf Italian bread, unsliced
  • 8 slices boiled ham (thin slices)
  • 8 slices swiss cheese (thin slices)

  • Melt butter is a small saucepan, and stir in garlic.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Cut bread crosswise into 8 sections (seven cuts), not quite through to bottom crust. With a pastry brush, spread garlic butter on both sides of bread at each cut. Tuck 2 slices each of ham and cheese into every other cut in bread.
  • Wrap loaf in aluminum foil; bake for 40 minutes, or until heated through. Open foil around loaf; turn oven to broil. Broil loaf for 3 to 5 minutes, until cheese bubbles.
  • To serve, slice through unfilled cuts (serve while warm).
