ingredients
-
Prepare Yeast
- 3 tablespoons yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3⁄4 cup warm water
-
Dough
- 2 cups sugar
- 1⁄2 lb melted margarine
- 2 cups warm water
- 2 cups warm milk
- 8 eggs
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 9 cups flour
-
Frosting
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 -3 tablespoons milk
directions
- Proof the yeast with warm water and sugar for 10 minutes.
- Mix remaining ingredients in order given along with the proofed yeast mixture.
- This may need more of less flour depending on your environment. I live at high altitude and it seems to vary. Just make sure that the dough looks like it is mixed enough so that you could use your hands with it.
- Cover dough and let rise until double.
- Roll out dough on floured surface and cut into 2 inch circles with a biscuit or cookie cutter. Set circles on the side and let rise again to double size.
- Fry in small batches in canola oil or shortening until brown, flipping halfway through to get the other side. Drain on paper towels or a brown paper bag.
- Serve with jam or drizzle with powdered sugar frosting.

These were super good! They got rave reviews from all who tried them! I ended up using quite a bit more flour than what was listed (about a cup more). I filled mine as well- with fillings my children picked out; strawberry jam, apricot jam, and vanilla pudding. Sounds strange but they were great! I used a pastry bag with a pastry tip to fill them. I also modified the recipe by 2/3rds, there were no problems there. I know what Im doing next Fat Tuesday! Thanks for sharing!

I come from a very Polish family with 5 brothers and a sister. I love to cook just about anything Polish and I'm pretty good at cleaning out the refridgerator and making something worth eating. Just got married on 07/07/07, so I would love to get some Just for 2 dinner menus. Finally enjoying the wonderful California weather. I haven't started baking, but I'm really excited to get back into the contests here.
