Traditional Chex Party Mix

"I came across this recipe over the weekend. This recipe is at least 25 years old and I imagine I got it off a box of Chex cereal way back when. I know we used to make it all the time for parties and that everyone really enjoyed it."

Questions & Replies

  1. This recipe has been in our family for longer than I can remember. It was called "Nuts and Bolts". I'm 74 and remember eating it since I was a kid. My wonderful aunt used to make 'tons' of it every Christmas. We always looked forward to it. I have her recipe and it's the same as this one. Some people add MandMs which may look 'cute' but I don't care for the sweet with it. Make it like this and you won't be disappointed. Thank you so much for sharing this so others can enjoy it :)

  1. This is the recipe I remember as a kid. There were no pretzels, or cheerios, or bagel chips, or tortilla chips or anything else. Just chex and nuts. Still the best in my opinion. The chex takes on all the flavors better than anything else they can add to it. Keep it simple and delicious! Thank you Wendy for sharing!

  2. Love this original recipe! We always added pretzels even though the original recipe didn't call for them. I see now on the Chex website they say bagel chips are part of the "Original" recipe...I think not LOL. I doubled the recipe and did find that a whole cup of butter was a bit much. I had to bake an additional 30 minutes since the mixture was still very moist at 1 hour. I used a 12.8 ounce box of Rice Chex and a 14 ounce box of Corn Chex which totalled about 17.5 cups of cereal. Maybe 3/4 cup of butter if doubling would work well. Thanks for sharing happy memories Wendy!

  3. I made this as written. Everyone asked me for the recipe, really?!? I think its been so long since anyone has seen 'the original' that they don't remember it & they miss what made it so great. I would like to try again swapping the seasoned salt for a hot salt.

  4. Thank you for posting this. This is the recipe I remember making for over 20 years but have been unable to duplicate the flavor since we losing the recipe several years ago. I always knew it was just W Sauce and Seasoned Salt with no other flavorings. The new recipes on the Chex cereal boxes that are "Original" are not as good with addition of Garlic and Onion powders. Our slight changes to the recipe is that we add Cheerios in addition the Chex Cereals & Pretzels. We are also generous in our W Sauce and Seasoned Salt spilling over to add a little extra flavor. We cook it in the microwave to speed up the process and it only takes about 8 min per batch. Cook it on high for 2 minutes, stir, cook another 2 min, stir, and keep repeating until you've cooked it a total 8 minutes. Let it cool about 30 min to an hour so the mix gets crispy and it's fabulous!!! It's a holiday tradition in our family to have Chex Mix on hand between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  5. This is wonderful! It only came out of the oven about 10 minutes ago and even warm it is soooo goood! Thanks Wendy for sharing your recipe. Made for Spring PAC 2010 http://www.recipezaar.com/bb/viewtopic.zsp?t=327498&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

I was born in Canada, lived on Cape Cod for 13 years and then moved to Florida. While in Florida I met my wonderful German husband and moved to Germany after just knowing him for 2 weeks. We have been together now for over 20 years. I am very lucky with him, as I love to cook and he loves to eat! I enjoy trying new recipes out on friends. My particular passion, apart from cooking, is running. I only started running about 3 years ago and am not very fast, but can't imagine my life without this sport. We both enjoy travelling, jogging, reading and cooking. We are also wine lovers and living in Germany there are lots of wine festivals - which include food galore - to attend. We love trying the local dishes and wines in the countries we travel to. We have an adorable 12 year old granddaughter (from my husbands first marriage) who loves to bake "American" muffins with me.
