No-Salt Chili Powder

"This is one of several "spice mixes" that I've used for years. I prefer it to commercial chili powder because it is salt-free. You can adjust the "heat" to your liking by adding more or less cayenne pepper to the mix. This recipe yields about 1/4 cup of chili powder - I was asked to change the yield from 1/4 cup to 14 1/4 teaspoons."

  1. Excellent chili spice mix. Sodium free. The cayenne pepper heat can be adjusted. I must say, this recipe is probably the best I've found to make as close to Texas style chili as I've ever tasted. Excellent recipe!

  2. Thanks for sharing. I threw out a huge pot of venison c.hili this week because we could not take the saltiness! Home made beans on a slow cooker, fresh veggies, tomatos— we could not figure out where on earch the horrible saltiness was coming from! ...until i looked up the salt content in chili powder! Mystery solved. I amgoing to double this batch and freeze it in Ziploc aloquots.

  3. This is a delicious chili spice recipe. It absolutely does not need salt. The oregano and turmeric add a subtle touch of sweetness. A double batch is about right for a full crock-pot of chili.

  4. I was low on chili powder so I gave this one a try. I like the fact it uses up spices I already have and also that it's salt-free. Thanks for the recipe.

  5. Excellent recipe. I am not one to be concerned about salt content, I just like my spices and spice mixes fresh. This mix is so flavorful that it doesn't need a grain of salt. Instead of garlic powder, I just add fresh garlic to the dish and I like it hotter, so I just add more cayenne. Thanks for the great recipe!
