Idaho County Applesauce Cake

"Soft and moist. Easy and cheap. What more could you ask for? I found this in my grandma's recipe box. It comes from a newspaper clipping, and the date was 1954. The best frosting to use is the caramel frosting. I ahve posted a recipe for that as well."

  1. This one did not work out for me at all. I made it as written, except I used white wheat flour (as I usually do). This had no flavor and was not sweet at all as the applesauce, apparently, did not give it enough sweetness. Even with all the spices it really had no flavor. It was dense and very dry. I had made it hoping to use it, unfrosted, as a snack cake for lunches. Since no one would eat it as it was, I did put a caramel frosting on it which helped but basically just made it a vehicle for frosting. The kids licked the frosting off and threw out the cake. As I'm not sure if my result was because of the white wheat or not I'm not assigning stars. This was made for the Healthy ABC game under the letter I. I'm always on the lookout for healthy cheap recipes, so I appreciate the chance to try this one and I'm sorry it didn't work out for me.
